Best practices for user-centered web design

Updated: May 13, 2022

When designing user-centered websites, it's important that user experience (UX) design principles are at play.

So, what's UX design? Put simply, UX design is the creative and iterative design practice of solving problems through empathy and having a deep understanding of user needs and goals before, during, and after website or product development.

Here are seven user experience best practices you can follow when designing your next website:

1. Make it useful

Does it do something people need to be done? A website must actually be useful and prove a purpose by solving a meaningful problem for its target users. If a website has no purpose, it’s unlikely it will catch anyone’s attention.

2. Make it accessible

Accessibility is someone's usability. This means your website can be accessed by anyone.

Inclusive design considers the preferences, needs and abilities of all users including those who may have an auditory, cognitive, speech, visual, and/or physical disability as part of the original design.

3. Make it finable

A great user experience makes sure the website and its contents are easy to find by organizing content logically. Every web page should be self-evident, users shouldn’t have to think about this! The amount of amazing content there is on a website is irrelevant if the user can’t find what they’re looking for, they’ll stop using the website altogether.

4. Make it credible

It’s critical that users trust the products and websites that they’re provided.

The website should be ethical, and the content and information within the website should be accurate. It’s impossible to provide a good user experience if the user thinks you’re lying or deceiving them.

5. Make it desirable

The product must be enjoyable to use! This is achieved through branding, image identity, aesthetics, and emotional design. When someone enjoys how a product or website makes them feel, it’s likely they will continue to keep using it and develop loyalty to the brand.

6. Make it valuable

Value is delivered to the business, stakeholders, and the customer who uses a website when all different factors of user experience mentioned above are combined. It’s important to implement these factors in a design with equal consideration because some users will find certain things more valuable than others.

Design trends evolve fast, but it’s important to remember that fundamental design practices remain constant. Designers only have a few moments to catch people’s attention before they leave your website for one that’s more user-friendly. By following these established UX best practices, you’ll be able to enhance user experience and achieve a successful website.
